FIR Giveaway: Along Wooded Paths

It’s time for another Fall Into Reading 2011 book giveaway! But before I tell you about this week’s book, here are last week’s winners:

The two winners of Reclaiming Lily are:

Comment #11: Amy (from I Ponder the Page)

Congrats!

Here’s how the giveaways during Fall Into Reading 2011 work:

Every Wednesday, I will post about a new book that’s up for grabs. If it sounds like a book you’d like and you want to be eligible to win it, just leave a comment on the post and I’ll put your name in the virtual hat. (You do not have to be a Fall Into Reading participant to enter these giveaways.) I’ll leave the post open for comments until the following Tuesday at noon. I’ll then randomly pick a commenter and announce that person as the winner when I put up the next giveaway.

Also, I apologize to my international readers, but these giveaways are only open to readers in the U.S. at this time.

This week’s giveaway is a book sent to me by B&H Books:

Book Giveaway: Read and Share Bible

*This giveaway is now closed.*

The kind folks at Thomas Nelson sent us two copies of their Read and Share Bible — one to enjoy and one to give away.

The Read and Share Bible contains more than 200 Bible stories, each presented in a 2-page spread with colorful illustrations. The stories are simple and familiar, and very accessible for young children. At the end of each story, there is a question for follow-up or discussion, or a bit of a ‘teaser’ to entice the kids to turn the page and keep reading.

Because there are 200+ stories, you’ll find Bible stories in here that you might not find in other children’s Bibles. For example, there are specific accounts of the plagues sent against Egypt, including the river turning to blood and the death of all firstborns in Egypt — not exactly light fare. However, on the whole, because each story is targeted at young children and limited to two pages, we found most of the stories to be a bit simplistic. That’s not necessarily a bad thing for very young children, but as kids get older, you’ll want to find a children’s Bible with a bit more depth.

L. has enjoyed reading the Read and Share Bible. He likes the pictures and enjoys discussing the questions at the end of the stories. I appreciate that each story includes the scripture reference that is the story’s source, so we can easily open the Bible to flesh out the stories a bit more.

Overall, I would recommend this Bible for the younger set — 2- and 3-year-olds in particular. A good “next Bible,” in my opinion, would be the Jesus Storybook Bible (a big favorite in this house).

If you’d like a chance to win our other copy of the Read and Share Bible, just leave a comment on this post. I’ll leave the giveaway open for one week and will choose a winner next Monday evening (May 9). U.S. mailing addresses only, please.

Update on 5/9/11: Random.org picked Comment #3 as the winner. Congrats, Jill!

Book Review & Giveaway: The Life Ready Woman

Not long ago I received a free review copy of The Life Ready Woman by Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis. I had previously appreciated Feldhahn’s book For Parents Only, and though I wasn’t sure if her new book would pertain to my current life circumstances, I was curious enough about it to accept it for review.

(There’s also a giveaway at the end of this post so one of you can win a copy of The Life Ready Woman!)
