Spring Reading Thing 2012: My List

I’m keeping things fairly light and easy this time around, primarily because I’m dealing with a fractured elbow, a sprained or strained wrist, and a bunch of severely pulled muscles. One would think that being laid up with an injury would give me even more time to read than usual, and that may be true. But I find myself immensely distracted and I’m having a hard time settling my mind and focusing on book reading.

So for Spring Reading Thing 2012, my goal is to finish the three books I’m currently reading, to read four additional novels, and to read two additional nonfiction books.

Here are the specifics.

Books to finish:

Wordsmithy: Hot Tips for the Writing Life by Douglas Wilson
Pattern of Wounds by J. Mark Bertrand
Respectable Sins by Jerry Bridges

New books to read:

Fiction:

A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley
Nick of Time (A Bug Man Novel) by Tim Downs
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place: Book I: The Mysterious Howling by Maryrose Wood
Death Comes to Pemberley by PD James

Nonfiction:

Note to Self: The Discipline of Preaching to Yourself by Joe Thorn
Rumors of Water: Thoughts on Creativity & Writing by L. L. Barkat

**

I usually love to do a more elaborate post, with a picture of each book’s cover and a little blurb about why I chose each book, but sadly, that’s a lot harder to do in my current state. Perhaps when my arm is better, I’ll come back and add to this post.

In the meantime, each book is linked to Amazon, so feel free to click over and explore my selections.

And don’t forget to check out the other Spring Reading Thing 2012 participants! You can find them at the official launch post. Happy Spring Reading!

  1. I’m wishing you a speedy recovery! I’m noticing that a lot of people have been reading Note to Self lately. Enjoy your books.

  2. Wow! I hope you feel better soon and heal quickly! And that concentration for reading comes back as soon as possible.

What little I have heard about Respectable Sins is very convicting. I need to add that to my list. I look forward to your thoughts on Wordsmithy.

  3. I’m finishing up my second Alan Bradley book – so I didn’t include it in the challenge. I might have to check out Wordsmithy too.

  4. Great list – The Incorrigible Children and Death Comes to Pemberly are both very intriguing. I look forward to hearing what you think about them! Hope your injuries heal quickly, that is no fun at all!

  5. I just love, love, love Joe Thorn’s Note to Self!!!

  6. Looks like a great list! I hope you heal up quickly! What happened?

  7. I look forward to reading your thoughts about Wordsmithy and Rumors of Water. Thanks for hosting again, Katrina!

  8. Ooh, two out of your first three books are ones I’ve been wanting to read (Wordsmithy and Respectable Sins). Maybe one day. sigh.

And your last two! (One day I’ll get smart and start adding in more fiction as well.)

Hope you heal quickly and thoroughly! Take it as easy as you can.

  9. So sorry about your arm! I’ve yet to break a bone, but I can imagine it is pretty uncomfortable.

Oh, I haven’t read A Red Herring Without Mustard yet. I think I’ll add it to my summer reading plans.

  10. I shall write as i read :) I tried to do a ping-back but couldn’t work it out ? :)

  11. I’m listening to a Jerry Bridges audiobook now & I still have a J Mark Bertrand book on my TBR list…if I can find it. I have been reading like a fiend this year, but I’ve been interrupted by spring cleaning lately. I spent this beautiful 60 degree morning finishing a book on my freshly cleaned back deck. :)

  12. Despite the fact that I know (from trying once) that it would be nearly impossible for me to actually participate in one of your reading challenges successfully, I do so appreciate that you do them so I can look on your (and others!) list and get reading ideas. I keep finding great books from you! Thanks, Katrina! :)

  13. I like the Bug Man series too. I have Nick of Time on my TBR shelf. I think I keep putting it off because of the anticpation and what if it is not as good as I think. :)

  14. Nick of Time sounds like a hoot. Spring Reading Thing (and Fall into Reading) grow my to-be-read list by leaps and bounds…

Ouch. Wishing you a quick-healing arm. And thank you for organizing and hosting!

  15. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Incorrible Children. . . . It’s one that looks clever that I’ve never gotten around to. Amanda might have read it last year because it was on the Cybils list, but I’m not sure.

I do hope that you become able to concentrate where you can at least enjoy the most perfect sedentary activity — reading — but I do know what you mean!!

  16. I really want to read Bradley’s series! I’ve had The Incorrigible Children waiting for me for too long.
I recognize several of the authors up there, but most of the books are new to me. :)
