Fall Into Reading 2011: My list

I already know that this fall is going to be a little crazy. Sometime in the next few weeks, we’ll be moving to a new house and the whole process of packing, moving, and unpacking is going to take up many hours that could otherwise be devoted to reading. So I tried to be reasonable in setting my fall reading goals. But I wasn’t about to not challenge myself at all.

So… 10 books. Can I do it? I have no idea. But I’m going to try. Besides, I’ll probably need to take occasional breaks from all that house-stuff. And what better way to take a break than with a good book?

Here’s what I have planned for the next three months:

Non-fiction

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Everywhere I look, this book is getting rave reviews. Friends of all kinds have recommended it. So even though I’m not usually into biographies, I’ll be reading this one. Actually, I’ll be listening to it. I have the audiobook loaded on my iPod and ready to go. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
The Next Story by Tim Challies. I’ve had this book on my Kindle for months and keep thinking, “I want to read that. I’m going to read that. I really should read that.” Well this fall, it’s happening. I’m going to read it. For real. Since I’m often attached to my laptop, frequently checking email, Facebook, Twitter…I have a feeling it will give me plenty to think about. The Next Story: Life and Faith after the Digital Explosion
Lit by Tony Reinke. “A Christian Guide to Reading Books” is the subtitle of this one and it has me very curious. Great endorsements and reviews only add to my curiosity. Lit!: A Christian Guide to Reading Books
Give Them Grace by Elyse Fitzpatrick. This is one of those parenting books that I really want to read, but that I’m also a little bit afraid to read. From all I’ve heard from others’ reviews, this will likely shake up my parenting philosophy a bit, and give me plenty to ponder and apply. Give Them Grace: Dazzling Your Kids with the Love of Jesus
Microstyle by Christopher Johnson. According to one review, this book offers “advice for writing compelling blogs, pitches, ads, slogans, and social-media postings.” As someone who blogs and tweets engages in “social-media postings,” I’m interested. Microstyle: The Art of Writing Little

Fiction

Sleeping Murder by Agatha Christie. I’ve been in the mood for a good, cozy, Miss Marple mystery for a while now. And though I’ve probably read this one (I think I’ve read all of Agatha Christie’s mysteries), I don’t remember it. So I’ll read it this fall and possibly refresh my memory. Sleeping Murder: Miss Marple's Last Case (Miss Marple Mysteries)
Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. I am quite possibly the last person in the book-loving blogosphere to read this one. And everyone seems to love it. I’m a bit intimidated — after all, what if I’m the lone weirdo who doesn’t really like it? Oh, well. I’m going to read it anyway. Peace Like a River
The Dragon’s Tooth by N.D. Wilson. After enjoying Wilson’s 100 Cupboards and hearing the recent raves about this new middle grade novel, I couldn’t resist picking it up. Looking forward to what promises to be a good ride. The Dragon's Tooth: Ashtown Burials #1
Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. I know what you’re thinking: Poetry? Katrina? Do those two things even go together? And I admit, I don’t read much poetry. But I wanted to do something different. And this book caught my eye. Besides, I have a certain affinity for felines. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats
The Bone House by Stephen R. Lawhead. Last fall, I read The Skin Map, and while it took me a while to get into it, by the time I was done, I was more than anxious to find out what happens next. Well, with this second book in the Bright Empires Series, I’ll finally find out. The Bone House (Bright Empires)

Once again, I seem to have displayed my slightly OCD tendencies by choosing an equal number of fiction and non-fiction books. Five of each. Should keep me busy while I’m juggling moving boxes.

I almost put Unbroken on my list, but figured I would never be able to get it from the library in time. : ) And you are not the last to read Peace Like A River. I will be. : ) But it has been popping up EVERYWHERE for me so I’ll probably get to it one of these days as well. : )

    Happy reading!

  3. Great list! You can put me in the camp of “read it but don’t get all the fuss” in regard to Peace Like a River. Will be interested to hear your thoughts.

Lit! Sounds quite interesting. Haven’t heard of it before.

I also haven’t heard of Give them Grace, but with my daughter entering the teen years, I’ve been meaning to revisit Grace-Based Parenting. Maybe I’ll try this one instead.

  4. Looks like a wonderful list! Good luck with the move and getting settled!

  5. Shauna says:

You aren’t the only one who hasn’t read Peace Like a River! I’ve been meaning to for years, and seeing it on your list reminded me. I’m going to add it to my FIR list too!

  6. Kristin T. says:

Great list…and good luck with your move. Hope it goes smoothly!

  7. Oooh how exciting! Your list looks great! Here’s mine: http://daintydeckerdesigns.blogspot.com/2011/09/fall-into-reading-2011-reading-list.html

  8. Barbara H. says:

I keep hearing good things about Unbroken but I wasn’t quite ready to add it yet. I just read Peace Like a River a few weeks ago. I wish I had thought to put Give Them Grace on my list. My youngest is 18 so I am nearly out of the active parenting years, but I have heard a lot about this book, and I have mixed feelings about it and want to see for myself what the author says and to know whether I’d recommend it.

I wish you the best with the move. We just moved a little over a year ago and I still don’t have the house completely set up like I’d like — still a few pictures to hang and the sewing/craft room to organize.

I read Unbroken early this year and I think it’s my best read of 2011.

I like how thoughtful your list is. I kind of put my titles together willy-nilly!

  10. Susanne says:

Your moving? How exciting. Lots of work, but exciting!

I saw “Unbroken” at Carrie’s site when she reviewed it. It hadn’t appealed to me when I looked at the cover but she gave it a good review so it’s on my TBR list.

  11. Janet says:

Someone in my knitting group mentioned Unbroken just the other week. I’ll also be checking on The Skin Map and The Bone House. Good luck on the move and your reading.

  12. Great list! I’ve never read Agatha Christie but keep meaning to give her a try as I think I’d love her books! Really looking forward to Fall into Reading this year :) Hope your move goes well and you can get in plenty of reading time in between unpacking time!

  13. Moving? You will definitely have a busy fall. Hope you can get your 10 books in anyway. Put those boxes aside often and sit down and read. :-)

Just finished Unbroken this week! Yes, read it. Great book.

I also loved The Next Story. I listened to it; would like to really read it now.

    Nice variety you have. Enjoy!

LOVE your list! And I admire you reading all of these while moving. Not a fun task…moving. Good luck! I have some of the books on your list that I have yet to pick up and read so I’ll be anxious to hear what you think of them.

    Good Luck!

  16. Nise' says:

I have one non-fiction book on my Fall reading schedule, and so far it is great. I must may have to add another one. Thanks for hosting this fun, fun challenge.

  17. You do realize that the poetry book you picked is the basis for the musical “Cats’” right? LOL If you’ve seen the productive you will see the lyrics nearly in their entirety within Eliot’s pages. :)

  18. Shonya says:

Oh dear, I’m not sure it’s a good idea for me to go around visiting people’s lists–my list of books I want to read is much too long already! :) I keep hearing about Unbroken, I may have to squeeze it in somewhere. And it will be interesting to see your thoughts on Give Them Grace–I had a mixed reaction to it!

  19. I would like to read everyone of your non-fiction titles! :)

    Thanks for hosting this challenge!

  20. Lit! does sound a bit intriguing, Katrina.

Thanks again for hosting…especially with all you have going on. Hope things go smoothly with your move.

    Blessings…and happy reading!

  21. Wow! Well, you are going to be hoppin’ busy with moving and all! If you get to all 10 books, I’ll be very impressed.

Yay for Unbroken, of course! (Now that I’ve read it I can officially start cheering for others to read it.) I saw someone raving about N.D. Wilson’s latest. I hope you write up a review of that one because I’m curious to know more about it.

Love your list pretty much in total though. Doesn’t Lit look interesting? I’m looking forward to reading that one also!

    Thank you for hosting!!

  22. Thanks for your help getting me linked from school.
Great List. I look forward to your thoughts on “Lit”, “Dragon’s Tooth”, and “Bone House”. I’ve added them to possible wish list.

  23. Amy says:

What an interesting list! Lit, Give Them Grace, and Microstyle really jump out at me as books I’d like to check out. Believe it or not, I read my first Agatha Christie a few months ago, Murder on the Orient Express, and I really enjoyed it, so I’m sure I’ll be reading more. My 8 year old daughter is a serious bookworm. She loves the Percy Jackson Series (I’m a big fan too:)) and the Legend of the Guardian Series, so I bet she would like The Dragon’s Tooth. I’ve never read Peace Like A River either, so I’ll add that one to my TBR list.

  24. Ellen S says:

Unbroken is awesome. I’m not much of a biography reader either, but this book reads as smoothly as a great piece of fiction. Enjoy reading!

  25. Great list! I really loved reading Unbroken! Great book! Give them Grace is one I really want to read sometime real soon!

Good luck with the move! We are in a similar situation…listing out house this week! Fun and scary all at the same time!

Thanks for hosting this challenge! Happy Reading! :)

  26. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Unbroken, so I’m planning to read it this fall too. I haven’t read Peace Like a River but I’ve heard a lot of good things about it as well; it’ll make my reading list soon, I’m sure. Happy reading!

  27. Jimi says:

Great list! I’m glad I made mine before looking at yours…I already have too many on it and now have more for the future. :) And, after looking at yours, I’m positive of my list is too long. Oh well, I’m excited to read whatever I get to, and the rest will be in my “winter” pile.

Thinking I didn’t make my list quite specific enough. Your’s look great, and very specific *and even*. Enjoy the move (as IF) and can’t wait to hear all about your progress through this book list : ) I’ll try to get my list more specific soon.
    Blessings, ~Kristy~

  29. Ruth Hill says:

Yes, I struggle to read review books too! I have so many to read. Your list looks pretty good! Best of wishes and thank you for hosting.

  30. Great list! I too plan to read “Unbroken.” I also have a copy of “Give Them Grace” that I’d like to get to…I think. I am usually not a big fan of parenting books, especially now that my firstborn is nearly grown and out of the house and I see so clearly all that I didn’t do and should have done! :) I’ve never read any of N.D. Wilson and I keep forgetting that I want to!

Oh, and I am one that LOVES “Peace Like A River” but I promise I will not hold it against you if you do not… Or, at least I’ll try not to!

    Happy Reading!

  31. I thought Unbroken was amazing. I’m currently reading Give Them Grace, and it’s very convicting.

I’ve not read Peace Like a River, either…so don’t feel like the Lone Ranger on that one.

  32. Cindy says:

I’m also looking forward to reading Unbroken this fall and I haven’t read Peace like a river yet either!
