In the movie, the friends do actually exist, and Fred gets Phoebe Cates into all kinds of hilarious trouble. (I think I remember it being not exactly appropriate for our seven year old yet, but if you are looking for a little humor to balance out your busy house, you might want to check it out. The story does have a touching ending.)
