A little hibernation is the plan for today

It started snowing yesterday around noon. Nothing too heavy, but it was coming down.

By 3:30, the roads were covered and the plows weren’t quite keeping up with it.

Around 6:30 last night, someone in our neighborhood abandoned their car at the bottom of the hill. Heavy wet snow covering the roads left things slick and not friendly to small, light cars.

Chad shoveled at least 6 inches of snow before we went to bed.

And overnight? It just kept coming. The power went off and on, off and on, off and on. Tree branches around the area were snapping off under the weight of the snow, landing on power lines. We are happy to have electricity this morning, when many people have none.

And this is what it looks like outside our garage this morning.

Remember how I said Chad shoveled 6 inches before bed? Well, here’s where things stand now:

Yes, apparently we got at least 20 inches of snow since noon yesterday. The local news can talk about nothing other than record-breaking snowfall, the importance of staying home today, and the fact that there are states of emergency being declared all over the place but that (thankfully) things should taper off this afternoon.

Some more pictures for your enjoyment.

Here’s Chad’s car, huddled under a thick blanket of snow in the driveway:

Can you see it? There’s a stop sign across the road from our house. It’s still peeking out above the drifts:

Oh, and those trees on either side of the stop sign? They are not pine trees. They’re not spruce trees. They’re not any kind of conifer whatsoever. They’re oaks. You know, trees whose branches usually stick straight out to the sides. They look so tired right now:

Apparently, other cars were abandoned last night. Here’s one I just noticed across the street. At least, I’m pretty sure that’s a car. It’s hard to tell with all the snow.

And here’s my wonderful husband, attacking the next 14 inches of snow:

The crazy thing is, I don’t think we’re getting the worst of it. People further east may get even more snow.

As for us, we’re just going to sit tight today. I’m thinking that, as long as our power stays on, I’ll get some hot chocolate going on the stove. Maybe we’ll play some board games or watch a movie. Maybe we’ll just each cuddle up with a blanket and a book. I don’t know. But I do know that we’re not going anywhere. We’ll be perfectly happy to hibernate today.

Yay for husbands who move the snow! You really got dumped on! Glad you have power, though. Enjoy your cozy snow day!

We’ve had 21+” where I live just on the border of southern Maryland and Virginia! My hubby has been trying to keep up with it too, and he’s moved a lot of snow. It keeps coming down though, and just got heavier. I’m going to sit tight and do some knitting, tv watching and reading.

Sounds like this is the perfect weekend to hunker down w/books. I was planning on it tomorrow anyway since I’m not a football fan, but the snow is a reason to start today! :)

Hibernating sounds like the best plan. MAN, that’s AMAZING snow there! We live in a valley and we’re lucky if we get one snow fall a year. I don’t think it’s going to happen this year at all. I’d take about 4-5 inches away from you if you’re feeling willing. Less for Chad to shovel! =D

My goodness! It snowed here in St. Louis last night too, but at least I can get out of my driveway :) I like when it snows so much that I can’t go anywhere, because then I really do feel like all I can do is read (and maybe throw in a load of laundry :)

I’m in Northern Maryland and we got dumped on, too. Thankfully our neighbor has a snow blower, though! I have to venture out into the backyard to measure ours.

Wow! Can you believe that we got not one flake?? It’s wonderful to have an excuse to just hibernate. Cool pictures.

I am jealous! We have not had one flake of snow this winter–after record breaking snow last year here in Seattle. We aren’t even getting our hibernation inducing rain this winter–it is all going to California thanks to El Nino. I am a season loving girl and am not ready to accept the fact that my pussy willow tree is budding or that my daffodils are peeking up 6 inches already.
Enjoy your beautiful snow and excuse to cuddle up with books and hot chocolate!

We are in Virginia, it began snowing Friday, 6am, and ended Saturday, around 2 to 3pm. Seriously, I don’t want to measure, but it looks like a LOT.

I lived in Vienna, VA in 1978 and we had a similar snowstorm that was simply awesome for this TX girl. We only lived there for a year and half. I don’t miss the super cold weather, but the storms that got us out of school were great! That particular storm was the best because it started on a Monday. They let us go home early and we did not have school again until the next Monday. The dads of the neighborhood finally got together and tried to clear the street themselves. Your pictures are beautiful and remind me of that time. Thanks for sharing!

Those pictures are absolutely beautiful. I hope all is well with you and that your power stays on. Enjoy the down-time.

Glad you have some power over there. We’ve managed to keep ours on and even get a hot shower despite the water conservation request (it’s just an unreasonable request after shoveling 23″ of snow and doing strange ballet-like jumps to get the snow over the 5′ retaining walls surrounding the driveway). My poor Aliza won’t even venture out into the snow, she claims that she will get lost. I tried to assure her that her head should still be clearly visible, but she will have none of it! Hope your boys are enjoying this a bit more.

Wow, great day to hibernate! Hope you still have power and have been nice and warm. That’s more snow than I’ve ever seen, for sure :)

wow, you got some great shots. mike’s truck looks like the big monster truck he always dreams of, with all the snow piled high. glad you guys are just taking it easy and hibernating – really, that’s the best way to deal with all of this.

From someone who has seen her share of snow this year, even I am going “Oh wow!”. It does make for some really pretty pictures though I hope you are all dug out and back to normal soon. Stay warm!

    Bev says:

Us too – we hunkered down, came out for a bit of air, and are hunkered down again, just looking out the window watching and waiting for it to come in round two. Knitting, books, hot chocolate – that must be what all of southwestern PA is doing, at least those of us blessed enough to have power. Stay warm!

Thanks for letting us see pictures of all that snow! Love it!

WOW. Thanks for these pictures! That kind of snow is something we here in Alabama can’t even imagine.
