Read Together 2009 Wrap-Up

Read TogetherI don’t see how April can possibly be over, but my calendar tells me it’s May 1st. Therefore, the April 2009 edition of Jennifer’s Read Together challenge has come to an end. Here’s how things went in the Callapidder household:

The goals I listed in my original post were as follows:

1) Read an average of 10 minutes per day to L. (age 2), in addition to our existing reading at nap-time and bed-time.

2) Read A Wrinkle In Time aloud with C. (age 10), shooting for four evenings of reading together per week.

And our results:

1) Failed. It turned out that Logan had no interest in reading an additional 10 minutes per day. I offered, over and over, only to be turned down because he was “too busy.” So, I modified. If L. asked to read, I said Yes. And I still asked any time he was looking at his books — sometimes he turned me down, content to “read” on his own, but sometimes he took me up on the offer and we spent a few minutes cuddling and reading. We continued to read, and enjoy our special reading time, every nap time and bed time. So in the grand scheme of things, maybe this wasn’t a total fail.

2) Succeeded! C. and I read through A Wrinkle In Time, and finished it about a week ago. Since then, we’ve started (by his request) A Wind In the Door, another book in L’Engle’s Time series. I loved reading A Wrinkle in Time with C., revisiting one of my favorite books from childhood. And C. seemed to thoroughly enjoy it as well, in spite of a few rather intense parts that perhaps should not have been read immediately before bedtime.

The month of May promises to be insanely busy, but I hope to continue reading with both of my boys. I hope that C. and I can read through all of A Wind In the Door, and that L. and I continue to enjoy whatever reading time we fit in each day.  Thanks, Jennifer, for the great challenge. It was exactly the motivation I needed to resume evening reading times with C.!

  1. Mark says:

As much as I love reading, I’m glad you didn’t force anything on L. While reading (and reading together) is important, so is knowing that reading is fun. Anything forced on you loses that fun aspect of things.

So in my mind, way to go.

  2. I had some blockages as well, but I learned that flexibility is good! So I think you made the right choice with L.

I’m glad that you and C. finished one book and started another!

I just now got the linky post up and I added your post.
