Friday’s Fave Five

friday-fave-five-spring

I’m once again joining Susanne for her Friday’s Fave Five carnival. Here are five of my favorite things from this past week:

1. Breathing through my nose. It’s amazing what we take for granted. But after 11 days of not being able to breathe through my nose, I am thrilled beyond reason that I can actually do just that today. True, I’m still taking some Advil Cold & Sinus, but it’s working. And I can breathe. And I’m not going through tissues at an alarming rate anymore. Hooray!

2. A quiet breakfast at Panera. Chad is off today, and he generously let me go out this morning to run some errands by myself. Ah, wonderful! But even more wonderful was the fact that I started my morning at Panera — again, by myself. A whole grain bagel, cup of coffee, and a book. That’s it. Delightful.

3. Another toddlerism. Have I mentioned that we’ve been sick? Oh, I have? Well, here’s a story to go along with it.

As we were driving home last Sunday, I noticed that L. (age 2) was picking his nose (sadly, a common occurrence during this 2-week illness).

C., attempting to end the grossness, told him, “No nose-picking.”

L. replied: “Yes! Nose-picking!”

C., firmly: “No nose-picking!”

L., vehemently: “YES!!! Nose-picking!!!” And back in the finger went.

I’ve tried to explain to C. numerous times that arguing with L. is fairly pointless; it usually just creates a louder and more adamant refusal.

Nevertheless, C. gave one last attempt. “Nose-picking is bad.”

Without missing a beat, L. answered: “No, C. Nose-picking is FAB-EE-YUS!!”

Fabulous nose-picking? None of us could suppress giggles over that one.

4. Half-Price Books. I did some serious decluttering this week — both in the basement storage room and in the bookshelves throughout the house. As a result, I have three boxes full of books to dispose of. Chad and I will be making a trip to Half-Price Books to see what we can get for them. The per-book amount is usually pretty pitiful, but when you need to get rid of a ton of books all at once, it’s pretty handy to walk into Half-Price Books with a couple boxes, and walk out with enough money to fund a date.

5. Free books. Of course, the reason I have so many books ready to go out the door is because so many keep coming in. But I’m happy to share many of those books with you. Watch for another giveaway from the Hachette Book Group this weekend on my blog (and still another next week!). And check out Lyn Cote’s blog — she’s a Christian author who’s hosting a big book giveaway in May.  Just send her a story of a strong woman — or simply leave a comment on a story on her blog — for a chance to win a big basket of books and other goodies. The drawing takes place May 31st.

    Katrina,
Thanks for mentioning my blog and giveaway. I’ve been getting some marvelous stories from readers about mothers, grandmothers, etc.
And my callapiddar days are over. My son is marrying a lovely young woman this October. But perhaps I’ll be a grandmother sometime in the future!

  6. Don’t get rid of those books just yet! I’m hosting a multi-blog book sale on my blog June 18th-20th! The idea is for book loving bloggers to post books they are willing to sell so others can shop for cheap summer reads! : )

I’d love for you to play along. The details are up right here: http://dancinginthemarginsblog.com/books/the-book-boutique-june-18th-20th/

Happy Friday! Enjoy breathing through your nose. :P

  7. Barbara H. says:

I had to smile at #1 — my husband has sinus issues and says that from time to time.

    What a funny toddler observation!!

  8. Karen says:

Great list! I’m laughing over #3, and #2 sounds so delightful.

  9. Willow says:

Great list this week! I’m glad you are all feeling better!

Tell your son that ‘You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friend’s nose!’

  10. Susanne says:

Heehee. I never thought of nose picking as fab ee yus.

  11. ellie says:

You aren’t going to start up another blog entitled: “Nose picking is FAB-EE-YUS” are you?

My niece is 16 and she used to say “hangerburg” for hamburger and “copping sharp” for shopping cart. My son was precise in his speech, even as a toddler, but he did say, “breaktas” for breakfast. My all time favorite though was from a kindergartener/fashion critic who asked me on a very warm day why I wasn’t wearing “short sleeved pants” like he was. It has been part of my lexicon for years now–the weather turns warm, and it’s time for short sleeved pants!

  12. Beck says:

    Nose picking is fabulous!
HAHAHAHA, what a cute little guy! and what a good big brother, too.

  13. When you told me that you had decluttered and were going to Half Price books, I thought “Oh, she has to fill up all those empty spaces.” So–spill it — how many books did you buy??

  14. Jolanthe says:

Sadly, I have a few kids that would agree with him ~ despite my endeavors to teach them otherwise!

  15. 1. Something I must admit I take for granted.

    2. Never been–can you believe it?

    3. LOVE it!

    4. Declutter? Explain please?

    5. Why I commented on the post above.

  16. Ah, yes ….Number 1 is very important!

  17. dianne says:

That cracks me up. YOu can’t wonder where kids pick up these words. But you CAN wonder how they can make such an association!! Definitely worth preserving for posterity’s sake . . . !

And I can’t believe you take stuff to HPB . . . I just find it insulting how little they actually give you per book considering how much they mark them up. I took a box once and got about $2 – nice books too (well, aren’t they all nice!!) Hope you got enough for a decent date!
