I’ve said more than once on this blog that my attire of preference revolves around jeans and casual pullovers. And I wasn’t kidding.
Even on Sundays, when we’re heading off to church, I don’t vary too much from my usual wardrobe. Oh, I suppose I diversify slightly: trouser jeans or khakis instead of my usual flare-leg denim. But that’s the extent of my “dressing up,” most of the time.
As evidence, I present to you: L.’s response to me when I wore a skirt.
I don’t know what got in to me, but a couple weeks ago, I decided to wear a skirt to church. (It shouldn’t surprise you when I tell you that it was a denim skirt.)
[Oh wait -- now I remember why I wore a skirt. Chad was teaching the 1st-4th grade kids that week, and he was conducting a Trivia Game. He had forced coerced asked me to serve as Chief Scorekeeper, maintaining running totals on the classroom's whiteboard, so I figured I'd pull a Vanna, and wear a long skirt. Not that she ever wears a denim skirt, but you understand, I'm sure.]
Anyway, I got up that morning, got myself ready (skirt and all), and then entered L.’s room to get him up and dressed.
Some background: L. is a fairly observant kid. If I happen to be sporting a different hairstyle, he’ll stare at me for a while before either pronouncing me “Nice” or making a disparaging comment like, “Mommy — hair funny!” (Gee, thanks kid.)
That Sunday morning, he was just as observant as usual, but he was definitely caught off guard by my dressiness. After a few seconds of silent staring, he exclaimed:
“OH, Mommy! NICE Jammies!!”
Now, here’s the thing: I’m always dressed for the day when I come to get him up. I’m never wearing my jammies. But clearly, he figured that this new-fangled clothing I had on must be pajamas. After all, Mommy never wears stuff like that.
It took me a few minutes to convince L. that I was wearing real clothes and that I actually planned to wear them out in public. But in the end, he gave me his approval. Jammies or not, he decided my skirt was “nice.”
And I decided it was okay, too. Maybe I’ll live on the wild side and wear another skirt before summer.

That’s funny! And it is quite observant to make the leap from “not Mommy clothes” to “morning jammies.”
Kyle’s always been observant too — noticing new hair or even a new shirt.
oh that is tooooo funny!! what kids notice, huh?
Great story – it gave me a nice chuckle early in the morning.
lol to funny! L. is one observant kiddo
Very Cute! I usually get that from my kids when I wear a dress. They stare like I just created a new line of clothing.
I, too, live in a t-shirt/hoodie/fleece and jeans most of the year. So much more convenient than skirts, but I will wear them on occasion.
That’s funny! And I do, in fact, totally get the translation from Vanna to denim skirt!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really wear anything other than jeans. My friends keep threatening to enter me for “What Not To Wear” because I never really “dress my age” whatever that means. Thanks for letting me know that it’s okay to dress comfy.
Too cute! And I’m with ya on the observant kid thing. My Baby BlueEyes always notices changes like that. And sweetly, always declares them “beautiful.” He’s so good for my self esteem
Katrina, you must have been traumatized at LU and I never knew it! How did you survive only wearing jeans after 4 pm and on the weekends! Ha ha!
I’m a jeans-and-pullover type of gal, too — even at church. Today it was jeans and a sweater.
And, yep — when I wear a skirt, it’s almost always denim! LOL
Glad to know I’m not alone!
