A place to lay my head

bedOkay, here’s the deal. Chad and I have been married for more than 15 years, and we’ve had a full-size bed all that time. After many discussions, and quite a few middle-of-the-night kicks, elbows-to-the-head, and pokes in the ribs…we’ve decided to upgrade.

Actually, we decided quite a while ago to upgrade, but I’m having trouble making a decision. It all comes down to: Queen or King?

So I thought I’d turn to you, dear readers, for your advice.  Here are the key factors:

  • I like to sprawl when I’m sleeping, especially during the warmer months. Chad’s not as picky, and is actually comfortable in our full-size bed. Well, aside from the aforementioned kicks, pokes, and elbows.
  • Neither Chad nor I would be classified as “tall,” so that’s not an issue at all.
  • Our bedroom is big enough to accommodate a king-size bed, but I think I’d rather get a queen and keep the space in our room. I don’t want the room to be “all bed.”
  • However… I’m wondering if a queen will be big enough. Will I decide in 2 years that I really should have just gotten a king?

I’d love to hear your opinions. Do you happily sleep on a queen-size bed? Do you think I’m crazy to not just go for the king? Did you buy a queen and regret it later? Do you have a king but hate the fact that it takes up too much space in your room? Have you gone the Ozzie & Harriet route, with two twin beds separated by a nightstand? (Okay, that option probably wouldn’t work.)

Bottom line: What would you advise me to get?

Thank you!

I’d go for the king. If you like space, I don’t think the queen us going to make a big enough difference for you. I would love a king!

  2. We have a king. I really don’t think you’ll be able to tell that much difference with a queen (than a full). And if one isn’t feeling well, it’s nice to have the extra space.

  3. Word Lily says:

I vote queen. If you’ve been sleeping in a full-size bed for 15 years, then a queen will be dramatically bigger. We sleep in a queen bed, and I’d say our circumstances are similar to yours (neither of us to tall, I move and he doesn’t much). Having space in your bedroom is nice, too. What if you move, and the king bed doesn’t fit in the new room?

  4. We have a king and love it. It is so nice having the space to move and not worry about bothering my hubby or visa versa.

There isn’t much difference between a queen and the full, you still feel like you are on top of each other. When we travel, I always try to go for a room with a king bed, because can’t sleep with elbows or knees in my side.

My vote is definitely for a king size.

  5. Lindsay says:

well I would think if you had a full a double would be a lot bigger. We have a queen and have plenty of space. I do not like to be touched when I sleep and I have a lot of space :-)

  6. Kathrin says:

Hm, tough one, to be honest… My bed is slightly smaller than a queen (maybe 3-4 inches), and it is only for me. I love it and I definitely don’t need all the space, though I move a lot before I’m really asleep. If you’re not sure a queen is big enough for the two of you, I’d definitely get the king.

  7. Sheri says:

You’ll save money on bedding if you buy the queen.

  8. Brandy says:

We’ve been married 6 1/2yrs now … for all but the last year, we’ve had a full size bed. Since we like keeping our babies in the bed with us for the first few months, we decided to upgrade when we learned I was pregnant with our second (around this time last year). We upgraded to a queen. For us, it’s plenty of room. Almost feels like too much, at times. This is coming from a BIG TIME sprawler :-)

  9. Kailana says:

From someone that worked in the hotel business, I would have to say that we had queen size beds and a lot of people were never happy! They would say that the bed was not in fact a queen, or that we were lying, or whatever… It seems that as people get older, they need their space more? Not being older myself, I am just going by the cranky people I dealt with on a regular basis. I only have a queen, and me and my guy think it is fine, but I think if we had bought the bed together we would have went king just to save having to ‘upgrade’ in the future. Just my opinion on my observations.

  10. Jolanthe says:

I vote queen too. :) We’ve had a queen the whole time we’ve been married and neither of us are big on touching while we’re sleeping. hee hee… I’m 5’10 and my hubby is about 6′ and size wise it’s fine.

He keeps talking about getting a king bed…but it’ll never happen. Especially since we bought a four poster bed a few years ago. Too bad for him. We enjoy a king when we’re at a hotel, but otherwise, love the queen.

  11. While I LOVE having king size beds when we’re at a hotel, I much prefer our queen. I went from a double to a queen when we got married – and while I have no idea how it would have worked for us in a double ;) I like the size of the queen. There’s even enough room for our little guy who still likes to crawl in bed with us on occasion.

Plus, when we do vacation, the king’s a treat! What else is there to look forward to otherwise? (haha)

  12. Donna says:

We have a king size bed and I want to downsize to a queen. I hate that the bed takes up so much room. Not to mention my children think that with the extra room the bed is made for three rather than two. I am not of the same opinion any longer. My other issue is my husband is in a different time zone in our bed or at least it feels that way. A little coziness would be nice.

  13. Lorri says:

I’d go with a Queen. If you’ve been happy with a full-size all these years, a queen will be heaven. A king might just feel too big in the room.

  14. My vote is for the queen. As already mentioned, it will be a noticeable difference over the full. When we go to my folks’ cabin and sleep in the guest room full-sized bed, then come home to our queen, I could almost have a party in all the extra space. Grin.

More important, go for the highest quality, most luxurious, highest end you can possibly afford. We didn’t and will always regret it. Always.

Additionally, I blogged about you today. You should stop by :) It’s nice to be back on the blog reading circuit, now that we’re all “adjusted” to live with Li’l Empress. Well, mostly adjusted :)

  15. Dianne says:

I vote for the queen too. Especially for saving on the bedding. We had a full until about 3 years into our marriage. A queen was plenty big enough. Besides, it makes king-sized beds a treat when we go on vacation. But that’s just me talking. I’m always a little on the conservative side – especially when it comes to space!!

  16. Cindy S. says:

We have a king size bed and I absolutely love it. So much space to move around in at night. I love being comfy and not cramped. We aren’t tall here either.

  17. rachel says:

Queen. I thought I would want a King – but when we are on vacation and sleep in a King – it feels too big and like we are in different beds. I also vote for a Sleep Number bed. Best bed ever!

  18. Amanda says:

I have had a queen now for 11 years and I am happy…

I think a queen would feel spacious since you have a full now and a KING may feel ENORMOUS! Maybe you should find a motel/hotel room with a KING and sleep there for 2 nights… just to try it out. Yes, you will have to pay for the room, but it’s better to do that now instead of purchasing a whole new bed in 2 years because you regret not going with the KING in the first place.

Let us know what you decide…

    Hugs

  19. A Queen bed(60″ wide total) is 6″ wider than a Double bed, and a Standard King or Eastern King bed (76″ wide total) is about 16″ wider than a Queen bed, if that helps. (my husband used to sell mattresses). We have a queen size and we’re both tall (over 5’11″) – it’s okay, but I’d LOVE a King size. Hope this helps!

  20. Susanne says:

We’ve always had a queen and never had issue with it. My hubby’s 6’1″ and he’s never complained about the length or size and the bedding is certainly cheaper than for a king. We’ve never had a bedroom big enough to house a king so it was never an option.

  21. Mary says:

We’ve had all 3 sizes, at present we own a queen. I really miss the king size, it’s just so comfortable and I don’t get squashed, poked or smacked… a big plus!

  22. Viv says:

King. I’m a rather active sleeper, so I’ll tell you when we vacation and sleep in a smaller bed, someone usually gets hurt. (Ok, not seriously, but there’s’ just not enough room.) We’ve had a sleep number bed for the past 5 years, I believe. I highly recommend it. You can each set your own number and the sleep is blissful. Good luck with your decision.

  23. Need A Nap2 says:

Cost of bedding – it’s easy to find sales where all sizes are the same cost.

Size issue – it seems like some mattresses are smaller than others, hubby and I do fine in a hotel queen but my dad’s queen was/seemed smaller. (might be the same as the hotel issue earlier, maybe those mattresses were a bit smaller)

Have you “test drove” any yet? A king will seem really really big at first but might be the extra space you need/crave.

We’ve had a king since we got married, first we had a free hand-me-down of a waterbed then we purchased a king mattress set. We didn’t get pillow top but we got the next-nicest. We love our mattress but:
-king size is very big to move, our mattress in particular is very HEAVY
-we have difficulty getting sheets to fit, the “deeper” pocket ones sometimes don’t fit or they shrink
-sometimes you can’t move them up the stairs (depending on the way it’s built)

Some of these issues are easily dealt with, I wanted a ranch style house so we didn’t have to move anything up and down stairs. I’ve learned to look very carefully at sheet sets. When looking at houses, we measured the size of the master bedroom to make sure our king bed would fit. When comparing mattresses, check measurements (depth of corners too) and weight. Yes a king bed can be a pain, but oh is it so worth it!! :)

(I agree with the commenter above, maybe you could have a getaway and try a king bed.)

  24. Need A Nap2 says:

Also, just in case, usually king foundations are split into two pieces. It seems kind of weird but usually works out just fine. :)

  25. Tanya says:

My in-laws finally upgraded recently. They were on a full for 32 years before moving to a queen. We have always had a queen and I love it. We’re not tall either. I’m 5’7″ and my husband is 5’9″. The queen is plenty big for us. If we want to cuddle, great. If we want our space, that’s great too. There’s plenty of room for sprawling. We’ve even had nights when one of the kids will join us in the middle and it works out okay. Not ideal, mind you! But the queen is big enough to have one child (ours are 3 and 5 years old) join us, if needs be.

  26. Sarah says:

a king, is definitely the way to go if you have the space…I wouldn’t trade mine for all the tea in china….

  27. hope42day says:

My vote is for the king!

  28. Rose says:

We have a King right now. But I’m thinking when it’s time to buy a new bedroom set (when we move in 7 to 10 years, lol) we’ll be looking at a queen. I’ve lost a lot of weight, have a bit more to go, and our kids are all big (8 and older) and aren’t sleeping in our bed, so the King feels too big. Though it is nice when we are all cuddled together watching something on TV.

  29. Katrina @ Callapidder Days says:

Wow – you guys are awesome! Thank you so much for chiming in with your thoughts and advice. Chad and I are going to make a decision this week and get the bed ordered! I’ll be sure to let you know the results and how it works out for us.

  30. Ginny says:

We went from Queen to full after a few years of marriage. I wish we would have went to king. Queen is a lot better then full, but if you can afford & have the room, I’d go king!

  31. becky says:

We went from full to Cal King when I was pregnant. LOVE the space! Love it. Would not have this much room with a queen. Especially nice when the munchkin likes to crawl all over us in the morning (we bring him into bed with us for a few minutes).

Of course, my hubby’s a big guy – 6’2″ – so that makes a difference for us. But I love the king size. Just make sure you get a QUALITY mattress. We made the mistake of going somewhat cheap and a year later had to get another. This time we made sure we got a good one.

  32. Maria says:

We sleep very happily on a queen, but then we’re both of us quiet sleepers and like to snuggle. Also there are no kids (yet) to make room for.

  33. Wow–people DO have a lot of opinions on this!

I also say Queen. We had a full for the first couple of years, but we’ve had a Queen ever since. Unless you have a giant room, I do think that King beds take up the whole room.

I assume you have slept on a King when you’ve been away. We do like hotel King beds, but honestly, even then, they seem immense.

As for those who said you might not tell a difference between a full and a queen — that’s flat wrong. When we visit grandparents and parents we sleep in a full bed, and we DO notice a big difference. It’s too small for us, but like Mama Bear, the medium sized Queen is just right.

I’ll still like you whatever you decide though :)

  34. Julie says:

A good idea is to measure your stairway and see if the king will fit going upstairs. A lot of box springs can be bought in 2 pieces nowadays which helps too. I say go for the queen, it’s more economical and then a king will be more exciting when you go to hotels.

  35. Camden says:

King King King King King King

  36. Lori W. says:

I’m with C. – King, King, King!! We have a king and we LOVE it!! We had a queen when we married – and went to a king about 3 years ago. It is the best bed ever because I am a tummy sleeper who likes to hike the knee up and stretch out. (TMI?!) Like Jennifer, I’ll still like you no matter which one you choose. :>)

  37. Karla E. says:

We’ve had a queen for 19 years…yes, we’ve been married that long. It’s nice to sort of “standardize” throughout our house. Our guest room has a queen sized bed and Nick sleeps in a queen sized bed. We found that it was easy to move our kids to a “low” queen….think IKEA, no box springs…when they moved from their crib. So, anyway, a queen is plenty of room for both of us (non-night time cuddler/snuggler types) and the occasional thunderstorm refugee.

  38. We always slept in a Queen and when Hubby surprised me 2 years ago with a brand new Sleep Number bed for Mother’s Day, we opted to stick with the Queen. Boy, oh, boy, how I wish we would have upgraded to the King though. *sigh* The best part about the sleep number is that his side can be rock hard, and mine is softer and more comfortable! ;)

  39. Angie says:

My husband and I have a queen bed and we have plenty of room..enough for us and a few cats and sometimes a spoiled German Shepherd. Thankfully, Gracie (German shepherd) doesn’t get on the bed too often. :)

  40. Jennifer says:

I have a king and LOVE it! I had a queen, but I am a sprawler and it just wasn’t enough. I just wish I’d gotten my king sooner…
