I stood in line at the grocery store the other day, noticing that many shopping carts contained turkeys. Mine did not. Instead, mine held gingersnaps, pumpkin puree, and plenty of cream cheese.
Cooking is not something I am passionate about. I make sure there is dinner available for my guys every night most nights. And I enjoy trying out a new recipe every now and then. But I don’t ever think, “Oh, I just want to spend a couple hours cooking!”
Baking, though? Now that is something I can get passionate about. I don’t know why, but making a yummy dessert, churning out Christmas cookies, or turning overly-brown bananas into Chocolate Chip Banana Bread are all things that I find fun.
Luckily for me, I usually get to focus on the fun stuff for Thanksgiving.
This year, though we are hosting Thankgiving dinner, my mom will show up here at 7:30 tomorrow morning to start the dinner preparations. She thoroughly enjoys cooking a big meal for family a few times a year.
So I will let her enjoy doing “her thing,” while I get to focus on doing “my thing.” I’ll make the Pumpkin Cheesecake today, I’ll prepare the house for guests, I’ll get the linens ready and make sure the house smells inviting. And tomorrow? I’ll get a side dish going in the crockpot (one of my favorite cooking utensils) and give my mom the run of the kitchen.
Division of labor: it’s a good thing.
What’s your preference? Are you a cooker or a baker? Or do you like to do it all?

I’m a cooker.
What side dish are you making the crock pot?
That’s great that your mom will be over all day and you can prepare together.
That makes it very nice to divide things up based on who likes to do what. Thanksgiving Day I am taking corn pudding and green bean casserole to my parents. The day after I am making Turkey, Ham, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, and corn pudding for 12 of Tim’s family members. So I get to do a little of both this year. But his family is bringing the rest of the dishes
What dish are you making in the crock-pot I love cooking in that thing!
I am a cooker. I can make dressing so good that it will make your tongue slap your brains out!
And on a side note . . . Pumpkin cheesecake might be the thing that could turn me into a pumpkin eater!
A little of both. I like to cook, but I WAY prefer to bake. I’d pick the cheesecake over that turkey any day. I hope you have a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving with your family.
I’m definitely a cooker but I do enjoy baking bread – if I have the time. Desserts – I can take or leave making them, but I did make some pumpkin cookies and cranberry orange bread this morning. I’ve never been brave enough to attempt a cheesecake! Good for you!
Luckily for me, my grandma, who lives in the lower level of our house, loves to fix the turkey, dressing and gravy. I do the side dishes. We usually buy (GASP!) our pies at the grocery store. It is sad when it takes longer to prepare the meal than to eat it. There are other things I would rather be doing.
I love my crockpot, and I like to bake cookies and muffins. Nothing too fancy.
I would rather cook hands down than bake anything. I think the only thing I bake are chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin bars. Not sure why it’s so hard for me to bake but I can cook by following a recipe and baking recipes seem so confusing. Too many steps, tools and cook times.
I make the side dishes for Thanksgiving. ONce we hosted and my parents brought the meat.
I’m the same way…love to bake but not that fond of cooking. And thank you for the Pumpkin Cheesecake recipe…was trying to find one to make for tomorrow. But since I couldn’t I am going to make a Pumpkin Spice Cake. So I will save the pumpkin cheesecake for Christmas.
I love the crockpot too! Here is a really simple recipe for pot roast:
Two cans of cream of mushroom soup
One envelope of that dry onion soup
1 1/4 cups water
Mix the soups with the water in your crockpot. Add your roast and coat the roast with the soup mixture. Cook for about 8 hours.
I love baking but only cook out of necessity. Thankfully my husband loves to cook. He and our six year old son have been in the kitchen all afternoon/evening, preparing for the meal tomorrow. It’s awesome to see them work together. I only sneak in to clean the dishes!
I’ll be making Cheesy Creamed Corn as my crockpot side dish. I made it a few weeks ago for company and it was a hit, so I’m doing it again.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving day. I personally am a baker =)
