Last week, we spent a few sight-seeing days in the south-central part of Pennsylvania. Although Chad and I didn’t think the ride would be too long, L. clearly felt that it was horrendously long and tortuous, and cried or whined through the final 2/3rds of it. Both ways.
But before he was miserable, here’s how he looked in the car:
Let’s compare him to C., the tween. Note the ipod wires coming down from his ears, the atlas by his side. Oh, and he was reading a book, not sleeping. We were much too boring for him, apparently, and he was forced to retreat into the world of the Warriors cats.
We visited the Hershey Gardens the first night, which was lovely (especially the Butterfly House), except for when we got caught in a torrential downpour. Here are my guys, after the rain. If you look closely, you can see L.’s soaking hair plastered to his head.
The next morning was the fateful cavern visit. I mentioned that I entertained him with my cell phone. But at one point, Chad was in charge of entertaining him while C. and I checked out an underground lake. Chad resorted to using the camera to keep L. amused. The result:
But despite the immense slight stress of the trip, I still got at least one good picture of the guys underground:
Later that day, L. and I napped at the hotel while Chad and C. visited the capitol building in Harrisburg:
The next morning was the highlight of the trip for the boys. We visited Hershey’s Chocolate World. Where, by the way, they liberally hand out free samples, a policy for which I was very appreciative. C. met a Kit-Kat:
…and enjoyed the ride that explained how chocolate is made:
We all had fun at the 3-D show, and even L. donned his glasses for the fun:
Of course, L.’s favorite part was stealing my Special Dark milkshake. He would not. let. go. of the cup and sucked continuously on that straw until I forcefully reclaimed my well-deserved treat:
Chad and C. again headed off to do historical things again that afternoon, visiting the National Civil War Museum:
The next morning, we headed home. No pictures of that…we were all too tired to take pictures. It was a nice trip, but we were certainly ready to get home, back to our comfy beds and familiar routine.

These are wonderful photographs. I’m glad Hershey’s Chocolate World is generous with the samples. Sounds like a little corner of heaven. My husband would love the historical sites. I hope you enjoy being back home.
You were right in my neck of the woods! I live right outside Harrisburg! I hope you enjoyed your visit.
Glad that you all enjoyed your trip. I was just telling Michael last week that we should take the kids there. We stopped there about 12 years ago after we got married and enjoyed the area.
I’m not far from Harrisburg and Hershey either! I’m glad you enjoyed your visit to our part of PA.
What a neat trip, despite the little incidents and toddler-ness. Great pictures and now you have me thinking about a Special Dark milkshake!
Looks fun.
Last week Amanda enjoyed the butterfly gardens at the Smithsonian with her Grandpa.
Yum–Special Dark milkshake. Makes my mouth water.
And you know what you were saying about the kids being similar? When K was a baby, he cried in the car all the time. Not so much after one, but we still know when we have made him unhappy.
Boy I don’t know if I could’ve shared my special dark milkshake, even with my own flesh and blood. You’re a better person than I. :v)
I always seem to need a vacation to recuperate from my vacation.
Looks and sounds like y’all had a nice trip.
I want to visit Hersey, PA one day…never been in that part of the country before.
My husband is reading the Warriors books! And I plan on checking them out myself.
Love all the pictures. Sounds like you had a wonderful time
Oh my goodness! My office is right down the steps from the Capitol! I could’ve run up (not literally) the Capitol steps to say hi!
I took two of my nephews to the Butterfly House about two years ago and they loved it. Still haven’t scrapbooked that year. LOL
Looks like a fun trip, toddler woes aside!
