Book Review: The Potty Training Answer Book

I must admit (and I know many moms would agree), potty training is not exactly my favorite parenting responsibility. I survived training C., but it wasn’t always pretty. Some days I kept my cool and followed all the advice to not let potty training become a battle. Other days, out of sheer exhaustion and frustration, I battled with the best (or perhaps I should say worst) of them. Fortunately, C. is none the worse for his experience, and I happily haven’t thought about potty training for the last 5+ years.

But I know it’s all going to come around my way again. L. is only 16 months old, so I’m thinking that within the next two years, potty training will once again move to the forefront of my obligations as a parent.

So when the folks at Sourcebooks asked if I’d like to take a look at a book on potty-training, I accepted. After all, I’m sure I can use all the help I can get.

The Potty Training Answer Book: Practical Answers to the Top 200 Questions Parents Ask is full of information, advice, and encouragement, yet is also a quick read. It’s set up in an accessible question-and-answer format and covers everything from a child’s readiness to how a child’s temperament might affect the training process to bedwetting, stress, and setbacks. It is printed in a nice, compact format, so it’s easy to take with you wherever you might have some time to read a bit.

One of the things I really appreciate about this book is the fact that the author (Karen Deerwester) puts emphasis on working with your child’s uniqueness throughout the process. I admit I was amused at sections like, “What are the potty training strengths of a difficult temperament?” But not amused as in “That’s silly.” More like, amused as in, “Oh yeah, I have a feeling I’ll be revisiting that section when I’m training L..” (I’m not saying he’s difficult or anything…just “strong-willed.”) But really, I like that the book advocates looking at your child’s personality and temperament, as well as your family’s situation and schedule as you create a customized “potty plan” for your child.

I also appreciate that the author reminds parents that potty training will eventually happen, and it will eventually stick. All kids eventually get the hang of this potty thing…we parents sometimes just have to hang in there.

Some other questions the book addresses are:

  • When should we switch from diapers/pull-ups to cloth underwear?
  • Is nighttime potty training different than daytime potty training?
  • When are rewards not a positive potty strategy?
  • What if my child is afraid of using public toilets?

If this sounds like a book you could use, you can pick up a copy of The Potty Training Answer Book at Amazon.com or anywhere else you usually buy books.

A whole lot of rambling about illness, antibiotics, and other boring things

It would seem that L. and I are trying to set a world record. We’re seeing if we can be the mother-son team that is sick for the most days in September. I don’t know who else is competing, but I’m pretty sure we’re winning. By my calculations, we’ve been healthy a grand total of 4.5 days this month, and have spent the rest of September sneezing, coughing, feverish, coughing more, on medication, coughing, wiping runny noses…oh, and did I mention the coughing? ‘Cause there’s been some.

The current germ has been hanging around for almost two weeks and his fever zipped up to 102 on Wednesday, so yesterday, I was the dutiful mother and took L. to the pediatrician. My husband has suspected that L. and I are both afflicted with either bronchitis or pneumonia, but I was happy to tell him that L. is officially lung-disease-free. He’s also ear-infection-free. Which means he has a mystery illness. In the doctor’s words, “Could this be one virus on top of another? Yes. Could this be a type of ‘bacterial overlay’? Yes. Could this just be a nagging virus that he might be able to fight off? Yes. We just don’t know.”

And so apparently, when “we just don’t know,” and when a disease lingers for a little too long, we prescribe antibiotics.

A prescription for antibiotics might make some moms happy — after all, if there is a sneaky little bacteria in there, the antibiotics will take care of it. As for me, however…as soon as she mentioned “antibiotic,” a sense of dread overcame me.

You see, L. is not exactly an eager medicine-taker. He spits, he squirms, he hits, he yells, and when all else fails, he throws up. Granted, it’s been a while since his last bacterial infection, but during that particular escapade with amoxicillin, he threw up numerous times (pink stains are lovely), he animatedly resisted all attempts to jam shove insert the liquid-laden syringe into his mouth, and he generally made his displeasure well-known. In the end, he had to go into the pediatrician’s office for an antibiotic shot in the leg. Lots of fun.

This was not an isolated case; I could list numerous medicines that have gone into his little body, and then were promptly ejected.

So a prescription did not exactly fill me with joy.

This pediatrician, however, was more than willing to listen to my woes, my concerns, the fact that I didn’t want to be puked on again. And she looked through her database o’ drugs to see which one might fit our situation. In the end, she prescribed one that only has to be taken once per day, and one whose dose is only one-third that of the amoxicillin.

So far, I’ve been able to trick force convince L. to take two doses, with just a wee bit of bribery. With no puking. It’s a beautiful thing. Of course, this antibiotic has turned his poop brick-red, but we won’t discuss that right now. (Oh, he’s just going to love me when he gets older and sees how I’ve blogged about his poop.)

In the meantime, C. is a little jealous that L. “gets to have” antibiotics. Yes, my older boy is just the opposite of L., and always loved getting the pink medicine, or the white medicine, or whatever color medicine he had to take.

I’m hoping that L. and I have a healthier October, and that we don’t make C. jealous by getting to take more yummy medicine.

Book Giveaway: A Promise to Remember

Today is the day for the first Fall into Reading giveaway from the books contributed by Bethany House! I have thirteen books ready to go from my home to yours. Be sure to check back each Thursday to check out which book is up for grabs.

Here’s how the giveaways will work: Each week, I’ll post about one of the books. If it sounds like something you’d like and you want to be eligible to win it, just leave a comment on the post and I’ll put your name in the virtual hat. I’ll leave the post open for comments until the following Wednesday at noon. I’ll then randomly pick a commenter and announce that person as the winner when I put up the next giveaway. Please make sure that when you leave a comment, there is an easy way to get in touch with you – via email or your own blog. Also, as of right now, you have to live in the U.S. or Canada in order to be eligible to win.

So, without further ado, the first book is:

A Promise to Remember
by Kathryn Cushman

Tragedy, love, grief, and healing—the debut novel of Kathryn Cushman has all the elements of a searing yet inspiring story. For those who love Karen Kingsbury and Jodi Picoult, Kathryn, or Katie as her readers call her, creates a moving drama of two mothers from different worlds.

Andie Phelps is the envy of Santa Barbara. A devoted mother with a loving son and a successful husband, her greatest joy comes from reaching out to others….

Melanie Johnston is the envy of no one. A single mom who works long hours to pay the bills, and her greatest joys relate to her teen daughter and son.

Then the accident that changes everything. When opposite worlds collide, the impact reaches far beyond these mothers’ personal losses.

A riveting selection for any book discussion group, this uniquely told story will take you into the hearts and souls of two wounded women, dividing your loyalties and asking how far you would go if you had made A Promise to Remember.

“A beautifully written and heartfelt novel about loss, love and forgiveness. I was moved by A Promise to Remember. Christian fiction has a radiant new voice in Katie Cushman.”

—James Scott Bell, bestselling author of No Legal Grounds

Fall Into Reading 2007: Book Reviews

This is the place where you can submit links to any book reviews you do for the books you’re reading as part of Fall Into Reading 2007. A couple guidelines:

1. This is only for Fall Into Reading 2007 participants. If you haven’t signed up yet, please go HERE to find out what it’s all about, create your own Fall Into Reading blog post, and then go HERE to sign up.

2. Please link to the specific post that contains your review — not your general blog web address.

3. Please limit your entries to books you’ve read this fall and have included on your Fall Into Reading post.

4. Please keep your reviews family-friendly. I realize some books may have some touchy or difficult subjects, but please keep your reviews “clean.”

5. This is completely voluntary! You are in no way required to do reviews of your books or to link them up here. This is just a convenient place to gather reviews, so that all those interested can check them out.

6. I’m thinking the best way to do this is to put the book name and your name in the “name” section of the Mr. Linky. Something like “The Kite Runner (Katrina)”. Of course, you can do it however you want, but that will make it easy for people to decide which reviews they want to read.

While I’m sure it won’t be necessary, I reserve the right to delete links that don’t adhere to these little “rules.”

Thanks, everyone! I look forward to seeing the reviews!

Whew!

Well, one thing’s for sure: there are a lot of readers in the blogosphere! We’re up to 197 participants in Fall into Reading 2007… and counting. People continue to sign up and it’s been wonderful to see so many enthusiastic about their fall reading.

I’ve visited the first 135 links and will continue to make my way (slowly but surely) through the rest of them. I’ll have to slow down a bit, though, or else I’ll never get to my own Fall into Reading books! :)

Amazingly, I’ve received a couple comments and emails telling me that some of you have already finished one (or more) of your Fall into Reading books. I’m impressed and amazed! And I’ve had other comments/emails asking me if there is a way to spread the word about the reviews that they’ve done.

And so, just like I did for the Spring Reading Thing, I’ll put up a post with a Mr. Linky that is strictly for your Fall Into Reading book reviews. In fact, I’ll go make that post right now, so those over-achievers out there can link up their reviews. :)

If you haven’t visited any lists yet, take a couple minutes to explore the Mr. Linky list below. There’s such a wide variety of books, interesting bloggers to “meet,” and fellow readers to encourage. And then — get back to your reading!
