School starts in less than 48 hours, so today and tomorrow will be filled with pencils, folders, my label-making machine, glue sticks, a non-bendable ruler, and many other exciting things.
Personally, I love this time of year. The feel of a brand-new notebook, cracking open a package of pencil-top erasers, folders without stains or creases…ah, they are beautiful things. Not to mention the fact that I get to print out a myriad of little labels that say “C.” on them, and then stick them on all the magnificent school-enhancing items.
C., however, is slightly less than pleased with the focus of this week.
We made a trip to Barnes & Noble this morning, in an attempt to spend some gift cards I had break up the supply-gathering-and-labeling. But being the multi-tasker that I am, I brought along flashcards for C. to go over in the car.
The joy, it was abundant. That is, as long as loud sighs, grunts of exasperation, and monotone responses signify great joy.
I tried to explain to him how easy he’s had it. After all, I’ve gotten the flashcards out a grand total of zero times this summer, before today. And we watched school buses taking happy little children to their respective schools this morning. C. has another day and a half before he must board the bus of doom glee and he hasn’t had to practice his math facts much at all up until now.
My words of encouragement do not impress him.
I know that once he sees his friends, he’ll be at least a tiny bit happy to be back in school. Not that he’ll admit it to me, mind you. But the prospect of third grade won’t seem quite as miserable. In the meantime, I plan to intersperse a few fun things amidst the school supplies and subtraction practice: a trip to Starbucks (coffee for me, chocolate milk for him), a movie night complete with popcorn, maybe even a board game or two.
But for now, I’ve gotta go. The loose leaf paper and fine-tipped markers over on the dining room table are calling my name.

Hey Canden–Think of it this way…My kiddos started school 3 weeks ago. You are going to Love 3rd grade and you and your friends will at least have a great during lunch.
Enjoy you last few hours of freedom. Ha Ha Ha–you are going to love 3rd grade. I still remember my 3rd grade teacher and being in 3rd. Of course that was…ummm…how many years ago is that? 37 years ago eek?!
I always loved getting ready for school, too, and getting brand new notebooks and crayons and pencils organized and ready to go.
My youngest is going into 8th and gets a little less excited about school every year. It’s sad, when he loved it so much when he was little. But, as you say, once he sees his friends again, he’ll get in the groove.
I love school supplies, but school? Meh. I hope C. has a good year.
bellissima la grafica,
ciao
Oooh school supplies! I love school supplies! I think I’ll go get me some, just for the heck of it. Mike buys a new notebook every semester and fills up, oh – say a third of it! Guess who else likes school supplies!
I hope your/his week goes well.
Last spring I gave the PTA a check to buy Perry’s school supplies. So this summer when all the loot popped up at the Big Dot store, I was so depressed. I LOVE school supplies and missed buying them this year… and labeling them! We are so alike in that way!
Hope C.’s last 2 days are great, and his first day even better.
ahhaha! i cant wait to do the same for my little one.. not long now.
The beginning of a new school year is always so fun. Hope he has a wonderful year!
I didn’t get the flashcards out this year either, and feel really badly about it!!
I posted on Amanda’s first day back today as well.
I know that I still feel that way about new things, even as an adult. I know that it will all be fine, but I get nervous about it until after the first day.
Hope everything goes well.
So what movies & games are you/did you play?
I too have always loved the start of school!
Bluest Butterfly – We ended up watching Mary Poppins, which he’d never seen. And we played a game called Ribbit, which we both enjoyed!
Mary Poppins is awesome. I love all the songs in that movie.
I have never heard of Ribbit.
By the time I got home from my son’s Open House last week, I was ready to go back to 1st grade. It seems like it would be SO much fun!
Not to mention that I have yet to find adequate words to express my love for new, clean, crisp school supplies!
