I didn’t have to look past page 1 of Queen of the Castle to know that its author, Lynn Bowen Walker, was someone I could relate to.
Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right up front: I am not homemaker of the year. A bag of peeled carrots on the dinner table is often the closest I get to a side dish. I’ve been known to make my children snack outside in the rain after I’ve just done my biyearly kitchen floor mopping… My homemaking sins are like scarlet.
Oh, yeah. That sounds about right.
Finally! A homemaking book written by someone who understands what it means to not be naturally inclined toward scrubbing, scouring, and starching! That’s all I needed to continue checking out this book written “for the uninspired, domestically challenged, or just plain tired homemaker” (um… check, check, and check).
Queen of the Castle is broken into 52 easy-to-read chapters — that’s one for each week of the year. Each brief chapter offers motivation, encouragement, amusement, and practical tips, tricks, and strategies for a woman looking to develop in her role of homemaker. Because the book is intended to be read over the course of the year, many chapters offer suggestions and information specific to holidays and seasons (what to do when it’s too hot to cook, how to plan ahead for a more relaxed Christmas, etc.).
But perhaps most importantly, Lynn reminds us throughout the book of why we do what we do:
As homemakers, you and I set the tone for our homes. We have the potential to make them warm and inviting. We can create wonderful environments where friends and family can thrive.
One thing I really appreciate is that Lynn does not see the creation of these environments as a factor of whether or not our homes would pass a white-glove test. No — it’s not about having spotless counters and every toy put away. It’s about caring for our families. And to that end, Queen of the Castle does not (thankfully!) have chapter after chapter about scrubbing tubs or dusting baseboards. You’ll find chapters on health, prayer, nurturing your creativity, planning family vacations, and even getting the most out of flea markets.
Oh — and then there are the chocolate recipes. That’s right — every few chapters, you’ll find a chocolate break. And let’s face it — we homemakers certainly deserve a little chocolate, right? There’s Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Mississippi Mud Cake…excuse me, I need to go do a little baking.
Okay, I’m back. Please excuse the crumbs.
Simply put, I found Queen of the Castle to be a refreshing approach to homemaking, one that encouraged me to keep my focus on blessing my family while offering me practical tips to keep all the little “have-to-do”s under control. (And did I mention the chocolate?…)
