Book Review: Queen of the Castle

I didn’t have to look past page 1 of Queen of the Castle to know that its author, Lynn Bowen Walker, was someone I could relate to.

Okay, so let’s get this out of the way right up front: I am not homemaker of the year. A bag of peeled carrots on the dinner table is often the closest I get to a side dish. I’ve been known to make my children snack outside in the rain after I’ve just done my biyearly kitchen floor mopping… My homemaking sins are like scarlet.

Oh, yeah. That sounds about right.

Finally! A homemaking book written by someone who understands what it means to not be naturally inclined toward scrubbing, scouring, and starching! That’s all I needed to continue checking out this book written “for the uninspired, domestically challenged, or just plain tired homemaker” (um… check, check, and check).

Queen of the Castle is broken into 52 easy-to-read chapters — that’s one for each week of the year. Each brief chapter offers motivation, encouragement, amusement, and practical tips, tricks, and strategies for a woman looking to develop in her role of homemaker. Because the book is intended to be read over the course of the year, many chapters offer suggestions and information specific to holidays and seasons (what to do when it’s too hot to cook, how to plan ahead for a more relaxed Christmas, etc.).

But perhaps most importantly, Lynn reminds us throughout the book of why we do what we do:

As homemakers, you and I set the tone for our homes. We have the potential to make them warm and inviting. We can create wonderful environments where friends and family can thrive.

One thing I really appreciate is that Lynn does not see the creation of these environments as a factor of whether or not our homes would pass a white-glove test. No — it’s not about having spotless counters and every toy put away. It’s about caring for our families. And to that end, Queen of the Castle does not (thankfully!) have chapter after chapter about scrubbing tubs or dusting baseboards. You’ll find chapters on health, prayer, nurturing your creativity, planning family vacations, and even getting the most out of flea markets.

Oh — and then there are the chocolate recipes. That’s right — every few chapters, you’ll find a chocolate break. And let’s face it — we homemakers certainly deserve a little chocolate, right? There’s Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cheesecake, Mississippi Mud Cake…excuse me, I need to go do a little baking.

Okay, I’m back. Please excuse the crumbs.

Simply put, I found Queen of the Castle to be a refreshing approach to homemaking, one that encouraged me to keep my focus on blessing my family while offering me practical tips to keep all the little “have-to-do”s under control. (And did I mention the chocolate?…)

Happy First Birthday, L.!

Was it really one year ago that you entered our family? One year ago that you took our family from three to four?

Good morning, Birthday Boy!

Yes, it certainly was. One year ago today, you made your entrance into this world, and you’ve made it clear that you have your own ideas about how things are going to be! You’ve got your own plan for sleeping (‘up and at ‘em very early’ is your philosophy), your own ideas about eating (Cheerios rule; fruit? not so much), your own thoughts regarding what is worth playing with (VCRs, grown-ups’ books, and computer cords) and what is not (toys). You are a determined little boy, and we are all enjoying watching your personality emerge and develop!

You made C. a big brother, a role he proudly and eagerly accepted. Your giggles at his antics make his day.

You make your dad so happy when you beg for him to pick you up and then cry when he hands you off to me at bedtime (and yes, you have him wrapped around your tiny little finger).

You delight me daily with your smiles, accomplishments, and sparkling blue eyes.

The first year of life brings so many changes. When I look at your one-week-old picture, I can hardly believe you are that same little boy. And I know the next year will transform you all over again. Before long, you’ll be running, talking, taking on the world. I look forward to seeing all that your second year brings. But for today, I’m going to sit here a while, looking over the countless pictures we’ve taken, and celebrate your first year of life.

Happy Birthday, L.!

In High Places
By Tom Morrisey
For Patrick Nolan, every climb tells a story. And the story of Patrick’s life? He’s been taken right to the brink, staring over the cliff’s knife edge wondering how things went wrong so quickly.

It all started after arriving home from a weekend climbing trip with his father, Kevin. That’s when word reached them. In a silent moment, they’d lost the person most important to them — her death raising unanswerable questions and dangerous doubts.

Launching a new life in a new town to escape their pain, son and father find themselves in danger of being torn apart forever. As Kevin seeks a route to solace on the dangerous high face of the rock, Patrick finds a path to hope in the unlikeliest of allies — a prim pastor’s daughter. Together, they must find the one answer that can bring Patrick’s family back from the brink of the precipice.
