You may have read my 100 things, and possibly 6 weird things about me. If you stopped by last week, you saw 7 things about me, and 5 recent obsessions of mine. And now, today, you are privileged (ha!) to learn an additional 8 things about me.
Chris tagged me for this meme — thanks, Chris, and sorry it took me so long to fulfill my tag!
Oh, and I reserve the right to repeat myself, since I can’t remember what all I said in my 100 things and I’m too lazy busy right now to double-check.
1. I am a huge fan of online shopping. I do the vast majority of our Christmas shopping online, but I also use online vendors for everyday stuff like diapers, formula, cold medicine, etc. If I could find a way to buy my groceries online in a way that wasn’t way more expensive than going to the store, I’d do that too. I’m just not a fan of doing actual store-shopping, and I thoroughly enjoy when needed items “magically” appear on my doorstep.
2. I like to make large dinners and then use the leftovers to avoid cooking the next night. Since we’re a small family (3 plus a baby), a nice 9×13 casserole/lasagna or a crockpot full of stuff does quite nicely. It’s not that I don’t like cooking — I really don’t mind it — it’s just that there are many days when the hour from 4:00-5:00 is chock full of homework-helping, baby-holding, etc. and it’s much easier to re-heat than to cook from start to finish.
3. I am blessed to have a husband who likes leftovers and who never, ever complains about my above meal strategy.
4. When I was very little, my family took a trip out West. At that tender time in my life, I was deathly afraid of any form of cactus. I believe that I thought they would act like porcupines, and actually fire their little thorns at me if I got too close. (Is “thorn” even the right term for cactus pokey-things? I don’t know.) Somewhere in a photo album is a picture of a young Katrina (who would really rather be anywhere else) standing near a patch of prickly pear cacti. Fortunately, none of those mean plants took aim at me that day.
5. I have never had my hair highlighted. No real reason for that, just haven’t ever done it.
6. I really, really like fruit (especially melons and berries of all kinds), but I have to force myself to eat veggies. I’m just not crazy about them. And potatoes? I like ‘em mashed, but avoid most other kinds when possible, and almost never make them at all.
7. I have a sister-in-law who has been known to call me Snow White because it seems that wildlife follows me everywhere I go. Case in point: just two weeks ago, a bird got into our house and flew directly into me while I was trying to convince it to go back outside. This is just the latest in a substantial number of animals that have been found in (and removed from) the last two houses we’ve lived in. (See also: dead shrews in basement.)
8. I tend to remember numbers for a long time — like the phone numbers of friends from elementary school…things like that. But I am really good at forgetting the plots to light whodunits. I can pick up an Agatha Christie that I read 10 years ago and I have no clue who the bad guy is until I get to the end. Yes, even though I read it before. Chad remembers every book he reads and as soon as he reviews the first couple pages, it all comes back to him. Not me. I do remember some books — they just stick with me. But lots of them I can read and enjoy and then just forget. Strange, I know.
Now, I’m supposed to tag eight people for this meme, but once again, I’m going to be a rebel and not tag any specific people. If, however, you would like to share eight random things about yourself, then I tag YOU!

I have to say that the image of a bird flying into you made me chuckle.
Katrina, I’m exactly the same on number 9.
Can’t remember even which books I’ve read which is why I have a list that goes with me to the library but can remember birthdays, phone numbers, account numbers to the point of obsession
I, too, can so relate to number 8! I have the same problem at the video store. I have to call my husband and ask if we’ve seen a paricular movie already.
Your cactus pokey things made me laugh out loud, Katrina. They’re not called thorns. But I can’t for the life of me remember what they ARE called. Spines? Sheesh. It’s going to drive me nuts now. My stupid dictionary calls them “spinelike leaves.” Leaves? I don’t think so! Those pokey things are NOT leaves! LOL
I loved your responses to the meme, Katrina! Admittingly, I do most of my Christmas shopping online too. That is, when I’m not doing gift cards (most I have to mail out and it’s easier and cheaper to mail a little card than a big box–thanks for free shipping deals for those non-gift card gifts!). It is so much easier.
The Cactus story has me still laughing. Like me and the water buffalo. I felt sure the water buffalo were going to come hurdling down the street where I lived when I was about 4 or 5 and bash our door in. I had no idea that a water buffalo was simply a truck with a water tank on it.
Did it hurt when the bird flew into you? I’d picture it being rather… beak-y.
I’ve dyed my hair so many times that I’m always really shocked when I see my natural colour. My husband gave me the World’s Worst HighLights once, though, so next time, I’m going to the hairdresser.
I love to re-read books if they are really good! I usually remember the plot at some point, but its still good.
These are great!
Not to freak you out or anything, but there actually are cactus like that. In AZ the locals call them Jumpin’ Jack – but I can’t remember the proper name for them. All you have to do is just barely brush by them and they spit their pokey things (what IS the term for that?) in all directions. The pokey things have barbs on the ends of them (big ones) and they are terribly painful to remove from skin.
Thanks for sharing!

Your “cactus fear” brought back bad memories. When my daughter was younger, age 5-ish, she actually had to go to a child psychologist for phobias. One of her biggest fears…exotic plants, like palm trees and banana plants. I kid you not! We couldn’t take her anywhere like a mall or anything that might have plants like that…she would totally freak out! Once a security guard in a mall came up to make sure we weren’t hurting her or trying to kidnap her or anything. Imagine trying to explain, that no, she’s just deathly afraid of the palm tree. Anyway, maybe she’ll be glad to know that there’s someone out there that sort of understands. LOL
Fun facts! I am with you in the very small group of women who has never highlighted her hair. My reasons: I’m cheap and lazy (don’t want to have to keep it up).
Please tell me that you do like the French Fry form of the potato, or I’m not sure if we can be friends.
Don’t feel too weird about the cactus. When we took a resort scuba class, I was pretty afraid of the giant sponges underwater. They were huge! I don’t know what I thought they might do, but I was a little freaked out.
Great meme! I love learning new fun fact about people!!
How’s L. doing?
I am there with you on #6. I love fruits and most veggies but no potatoes. I eat them but can live without them. My son is like me and will choose a good pear over a candy bar. The bird thing and cactus thing cracked me up.
Amen to #6!
Thirteen years ago I started as receptionist at my company. Today I still remember most of the extensions of people there . . . even though I haven’t done that job in 12 years! Numbers just stick in my head like that too! I’m like you on plots though – forgetting whodunit!
ENjoyed reading all the things about you – thanks for sharing!
Great list Katrina. I love reading randomness. I am right there with you on number 8…I can remember phone numbers from childhood, but cannot describe most of the books I’ve read recently. People tend to think your crazy when you recommend a well-loved book, but cannot describe it to them…LOL
have a great week!
Katrina, we moved out of our house in Beaumont, Texas when I was 13 which is a very long time ago. But the phone # was TW2-8816, and if that doesn’t make me sound completely ancient I dont know what will. And yes, actually, the phone was big and black with a cord, and sat in that little alcove thing in the hall. Yep, it sure did. I also remember Alan Eloe’s birthday is April 24, but that’s likely because of love cast off. Broke my heart in 9th grade by dumping me, and I’ve never completely recovered. Every April 24 I wonder where he is and what he ended up doing. But I don’t remember what year any of my kids graduated from high school, sometimes I have a hard time remembering who’s how old, and that includes me…
