Blah-la-la

This brief video is of L. during one of his (kind of rare) “normal and happy” moments during this illness:

It’s also how my brain feels right now. All I can think is blah-la-la-la-la. I won’t bore you with all the details about how after my last post we ended up at the doctor’s office for breathing treatments, etc. But I will say that I am looking forward to a return to “normal.” I’m not exactly sure what normal is, but I think it involves semi-consistent naps and less crying, less laundry, and fewer car rides aimed at soothing a very sad baby.

In the meantime, I’m sitting here, reveling in the fact that L. has actually been napping for more than 20 minutes and has not awakened screaming yet, and watching Father of the Bride Part II. It’s been good for a laugh, which I think I needed.

I hope you all have a wonderful New Year’s Eve. I’m thinking that we’ll all be asleep by 9:00, as has been par for the course this week! So I’ll just welcome the New Year in the morning (most likely somewhere around 2 a.m., I’m guessing), and think about staying up until midnight some other time!

We’re all still alive here

There’s nothing like a sick baby to really throw off your whole schedule. According to the nurse at the pediatrician’s office (who kindly allowed me to share all my woes with her for a good 15 minutes this morning), L. has “what’s going around” and we can expect a few more days of misery before it’s all over and done with. I think it would be fine if the poor kid didn’t throw up his morning (and sometimes afternoon, and sometimes evening) feedings every time a coughing fit kicks in. I will, say, however, that the laundry has never been more on-top-of. Yesiree, there’s a whole bunch of clean clothes in this house. Not necessarily all folded, mind you, but clean? You bet.

On the other hand, Christmas decorations haven’t been touched. Christmas gifts remain in piles throughout the house, awaiting permanent homes. The bathrooms… well, let’s just not talk about the bathrooms right now, okay? But all that stuff can wait, right?

Christmas Day itself was a bit rough for us. I was functioning (or attempting to) on approximately 3 hours of sleep. L. was fluctuating between semi-happy and downright grouchy. I’m pretty sure I scared at least two of my brothers-in-law when they came across me crying. And it’s not like I was crying about anything in particular. It was just the whole weepy thing that kicks in when sleep is scarce. But through it all, it was still Christmas. God’s love doesn’t go on hiatus when my sanity does – and I am so thankful for that! So scattered amongst the foiled feedings and spontaneous tears there was joy and love and excitement and family and the knowledge that Jesus had come to Earth — God’s love in the flesh.

I think L. has turned a corner and I’m hoping that every morning reveals more of our usually-happy and bouncy little boy. I don’t know when I’ll get back to any kind of consistent blogging schedule, but hopefully things will be back to normal soon. And then I will be moving to a deserted island with my family for the rest of the Winter to avoid all germs. Of course, it’ll have to be an island with WiFi, so I can still blog.

Fall Into Reading Challenge Gift Certificate Winner

Okay – I finally pulled myself away from the tissues and laundry and baby nasal aspirator (which I don’t like anyway) and finished reading everyone’s Fall Into Reading wrap-ups. It was wonderful to read the books you all loved and even the ones you didn’t. I can’t wait to explore some of the authors and books various people mentioned, and I’m also looking forward to hosting a Spring Challenge! I hope you all will join in again – and spread the word so we get even more book-lovers participating.

My lovely very handsome assistant — also known as my husband, Chad — helped me tonight by picking a name out of a hat paper bag – the winner of the Amazon.com gift certificate. And the winner is…

You all can read her wrap-up here.

Congratulations, Southern Girl! Watch your email for your gift certificate.

Thanks again, everyone. And be watching Callapidder Days in March for information about the Spring Challenge. In the meantime, keep on reading!

Merry Christmas!

From our home to yours, we send wishes of a blessed Christmas, filled with God’s love and overflowing with joy!

“She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:7″

Merry Christmas, everyone!

The great blog post trashcan

I’ve been writing lots of blog posts lately, just not posting them. I write something, I save it, and then hours later, I delete it. Upon re-reading, the posts look dumb or boring or ridiculous. So they get sent into the great Blogger unknown, never to be read again. It would appear that my brain is not functioning well enough right now to compose thoughtful or useful or even funny posts.

And so, I’ll just give up on that goal and share with you a theme going on around here. It’s gross, so if you don’t want to read gross stuff, turn back now. You’ve been warned.

Event #1: L. has a cold and is very clingy and miserable. In the process of dealing with this cold, he has apparently swallowed way too much mucus and has thrown up (usually on me) more than once. (Needless to say, my original plans for much baking and cleaning this week have not exactly come to fruition.)

Event #2: The cat puked right in front of the Christmas tree today. Fortunately, she missed the presents, but now there are a few nice stains for me to deal with. Whoever lived in this house before us and decided that white (or off-white) carpeting was a good idea clearly did not have a pukey cat and two sons.

Event #3: I was getting ready to make some Dark Chocolate Peppermint Bark this morning. C. clearly misheard my announcement of my plans and asked, “Did you say you’re making Peppermint Barf?” Which he then thought was hilarious. When you live in a house with boys, gross-out humor is just a fact of life.

I’ve had quite enough of this particular theme and I’ll be glad when it passes. In the meantime, I’m throwing in the towel on the cleaning and baking and going to see Charlotte’s Web with my mom and C. today. It’ll be more fun than cleaning, anyway.
