Fall Into Reading Challenge Book List

Here it is: my list of books that I hope to read this Fall. I’ve started 3 of them, but haven’t gotten too far (I’m about 2 chapters into each of them), so I still included them.

Non-fiction:

For non-fiction, I picked a variety of books, most of which have been on my shelf for a while. My usual approach to non-fiction is: get a book, dive into it eagerly, read 2-3 chapters, find another wonderful-looking book at the bookstore, dive into that one eagerly (putting the first one aside), read 2-3 chapters, find yet another wonderful-looking book…. etc. So I’m looking forward to finishing all of these!

The Most Important Place on Earth by Robert Wolgemuth
Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose
Listen by Keri Wyatt Kent
Simple Hospitality by Jane Jarrell
Generation NeXt Parenting by Tricia Goyer
Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her by Melanie Rehak (I read over half of it, then picked my way through the rest, only reading the good stuff!)

Fiction:

My goal here was variety. I easily fall into fiction ruts (thriller after mystery after suspense after thriller), so this Fall I’m trying out some new-to-me authors and some different genres than my “usual.” I may very well finish these four quickly, since I tend to devour fiction, but if I do, don’t worry; there’s plenty more where these came from!

A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O’Connor
The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
Hood: Book One in the King Raven Trilogy by Stephen R. Lawhead
Straight Up by Lisa Samson
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Bible study:

I’m currently working through the first one, and am looking forward to the second one as well. I have them listed here to give me some accountability, so that I don’t abandon them part-way through.

Java With the Judges by Sandra Glahn
Espresso With Esther By Sandra Glahn

Read-aloud (with C., age 7):

I’m ashamed to say, I skipped the whole fairy tale / fable thing with C.. We went from board books to Dr. Seuss to Chronicles of Narnia! So I’m backing up a little and hitting on these classics with him this Fall. He’s already looking forward to it.

Aesop’s Fables
The Random House Book of Fairy Tales

Read-aloud (with L., age 4 months):

L. loves to look at books, but I’m horrible about reading with him. So I’ve listed these here as a self-prompting to get reading with him.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown
Moo Baa La La La by Sandra Boynton
Doggies by Sandra Boynton

I’m sure Mike wishes my pile were that high. Instead of many little piles scattered about the house like deer droppings!

  2. Blessed Beyond Measure says:

I’m going to do it with a thursday thirteen twist. 13 books, didnt bother to take a photo, but as usual lifes a little nuts around here. Fall is the perfect time to curl up with a book, even if it’s only in the tub!

    Great list Katrina :)

Thanks for starting this, I’m a huge book lover, so this is right up my alley :)

  4. Susanne says:

You’ve got a Lisa Samson, too! And I can so relate to how you start and stop non fictions.

  5. Karla says:

How exciting! I love books! I hope to find a few minutes over the next couple of days to get my “list” together & come back to link.
Goodnight Moon is one of my personal favorites. ;) And we have Barnyard Dance; a must-read for any Sandra Boynton fan. heehee
I love the picture of the stack of books. Did I mention that I love books?! :)
    What a great idea!

  6. Barbara H. says:

I haven’t heard of many of these — will have to investigate further!

  7. twiga92 says:

    Those Bible studies sound intriguing.

  8. Master of None says:

Yes, my pile has 10 books on it and I picked all 10. If one is not very exciting…I’ll just reach over and get another one. Actually there are only nine…I need to find At Home in Mitford that I received as a gift about 7 years ago…and give it another try.
    Thanks for the challenge!

Great list. I just finish Simple Hospitality and enjoyed it. A great little book with good ideas and very simply written, hope you enjoy it! And all the others.

  10. San says:

I’m thrilled to find your selection for Bible studies–two from the Coffee Cup series. Praying you will be blessed. :)

  11. Jenny says:

Thanks for this Challenge! I’ve added Simple Hospitality to next year’s list.

  12. Nancy says:

I do the same thing with non-fiction. I want to like it, but I almost never finish them.

I read the Eyre Affair this summer. It was interesting, but I don’t think I’m gonna read the next one. One night, we were getting off the highway behind a car whose license plate said SPEC OPS 27. I hate to admit that some of the literary references in the book went over my head, but the ones I “got” were great.

  13. Monica - books are our friends says:

I have my eye on Reading Like a Writer, too, and my library has it, goody for me. :) You should check out Spunk and Bite, another writer’s refrence book I just started.

    Monica

  14. Katrina says:

Monica – I have been curious about Strunk and Bite. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, I saw your list of books – looks good! It’s been a loooong time since I read Great Expectations. And I have say that the study by E. George that you have on your list had a big impact on my life! Thanks for joining the challenge.

  15. Sarah's In the Midst of It says:

Katrina, I saw on your sidebar that The Thrteenth Tale is on your list to read soon. I just finished it recently, andit was a GREAT read! Let me know what you think of it when you’re done, okay? I loved it!

    hi katrina!
i had “simple hospitality” on my fall into reading list, but never got around to…ah…getting it to read (our library didn’t have a copy). i’m wondering if you could tell me if it’s worth purchasing/owning? especially for those of us who love offering hospitality?
    thanks!
